Welsh Cycling 5 Week Development Block

Rider Eligibility

  • Aged between 10-14 Years, Priority will be given to U12 riders.
  • British Cycling member
  • Eligible for Welsh team selection ( Resident in Wales for at least 5 years, Born in Wales or Parent born in Wales)

 

This session will have two groups. The Groups will be Beginner/Impovers and Experienced group and there will be 15 minute rotations on the track.

Please book your child into a group according to ability. The final decison on what group a child would ride in will be made by the coach. To help your booking here are the rough details and standards of each... 

 

Beginner/Improvers Group

This group is for riders who are either new to the track or looking to develop their basic track skills and confidence.

Examples of Basic Track Skills Include-

- Riding on all three lines of the track.

- Learning to ride in a group, both next to a rider and behind a rider (Keeping a maximum gap of half a wheel.

- Changing hand position from tops to drop or drops to tops.

- Changing from the front to the back in a line of riders.

- Checking your shoulder as you move on the track.

- Getting out of the saddle on the track.

Experienced

This group is for riders who can complete all of the above skills and looking to develop race specific skills e.g. Stacking, Rushing a gap, Riding high and slow, Madison and many more.

All riders in this group should be able to… 

  • Confidently ride on the blue line for the duration of the activity (Typically 20 Minutes) without showing any signs of erratic movement (Changes in speed, Dropping below the line)
  • Riders must be able to ride in pairs on the blue line.
  • Riders must be able to demonstrate they are able to follow a wheel up and down the track.
  • In a group of 10 riders, when changing the front rider should take no longer than one lap to rejoin at the back of the group
  • Remove a hand from the handle bar and keep it removed for at least one lap.

 

Riders are able to progress from one group to another. This decision will be made by the coach, any riders who do not move up will be given regular feedback on what to improve to allow them to progress.

Riders who are expecting  to compete in the following events-  Maindy Mini League / Icebreakers / Newport Track League/ Regional Omnium's

 

Were also keen to use the session as a way of providing opportunity’s to develop the skills of coaches, so if you’re a coach interested in attending the session to learn more and be mentored please contact Owen Thomas directly.
