HSBC UK Women and Girls Rider Development Sessions - Bath

Event Overview

Women and Girls Rider Developments Sessions provide a dedicated coaching environment for females wanting to improve their cycling performance.

All sessions are delivered on a traffic-free closed road circuit delivered by a British Cycling Coaches to help you:

  • Ride with friends or other riders
  • Learn about group riding and etiquette
  • Develop bike handling techniques
  • Develop cycling fitness

These sessions are designed to be technically and physically challenging in a safe, fun and supportive environment. These sessions are 1.5 hours of coaching alongside riders of a similar ability.

Non British Cycling members are welcome to attend one session but membership is encouraged to attend further sessions: https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/membership.

Please read the descriptions below carefully and select the session best suits your ability:


Basic Group Riding Skills - 10.30am - 12.00pm

Aimed at riders who are new to group riding or want to apply and develop their cycling skills in a group riding situation.

You may want to join a cycling club and go on a club ride, ride further and faster with friends or gain confidence in a group.

Prior to attending, riders should be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic bike handling skills such as taking one hand off the handle bar, looking over a shoulder and coming to a controlled stop.
  • Ride comfortably for 30 mins.
  • Ride next to another rider.

Hybrid bikes are permitted in this session but tri-bars are not allowed.

You can expect to practice some or all of the skills below during the session:

  • Following a wheel
  • Riding next to another rider
  • Basic group riding skills
  • Riding in contact with another rider
  • Changing in a group
  • Group communication
  • Cornering skills

You will be able to put your new skills in to context in fun group competition at the end of the session.


Advanced Group Riding Skills and Race Preparation - 12.30 - 2.00pm

Aimed at riders who want to apply and develop their cycling skills into race scenarios. 

You may want to try a crit race, team time trial or join a chain gang training session in your club.

Prior to attending, riders should be able to:

  • Ride confidently in a group or have attended one or more of the ‘Basic Group Riding Skills’ sessions above.
  • Be able to follow a wheel and ride closely to another rider in a bunch.
  • Demonstrate good communication with other riders in a group.
  • Ride comfortably for 1hr.

You will need a road bike with drop handlebars for this session. Tri-bars are not allowed.

You can expect to practice some or all of the skills below during the session:

  • Advanced group riding skills
  • Riding in a bunch
  • Race starts
  • Time trial starts
  • Cornering skills
  • Advanced cornering - in a bunch
  • Sprints
  • Attacks

You will be able to put your new skills in to context in a Coach-led Race at the end of the session.


All riders are required to:

  • Become a British Cycling Member after one session https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/membership 
  • Sign-on and be ready 10 minutes prior to start of the session.
  • Bring a freewheel bike in good working order with two functioning brakes.
  • Wear a helmet.
  • Wear gloves (recommended). 
  • Not bring Tri-Bars on bike.
  • Dress appropriately for the weather conditions (covered legs and arms are recommended).
  • Bring food and drink for the duration of the session.
  • Fill out a consent form and return to organiser if under the age of 16
