Event Summary

Event Overview

"On Sunday 13 May 2018, the CMC Llandeilo Cycling Club, in association with The Douglas Bader Foundation are promoting an event to commemorate the famous raids on the dams in Germany that took place on the 16 & 17 May 1943 and which accelerated the end of WW2.

This unique event will be a ride up the beautiful Towy Valley and on to the Llyn Brianne Reservoir above Llandovery and called   THE DAMBUSTER CYCLE RIDE.

The event will have two distances - The 55 Mile "Target Mission" and the 35 Mile "Fighter Escort" route.

Both routes take you to Llandovery and the longer of the two routes then heads up via Cil-y-Cwm to Rhandirmwyn.  The final run up to the dam and reservoir includes a 4 mile steady climb and this is the toughest part of the entire ride. The feed station at the dam will be manned by family members of the famous war-time ace and double amputee Douglas Bader, in whose name The Douglas Bader Foundation was set up on his death in 1982.  The shorter route turns off at Llandovery avoiding the major climb to the dam and apart from one short climb to the village of Bethlehem, is as flat as any ride in this area can possibly be!

The emphasis of the day is FUN and ENJOYMENT and is an event that we have organised to encourage riders of all abilities, including new-comers to cycling and in line with our support of The Douglas Bader Foundation, we also welcome entries from those with disabilities who can ride either standard road bikes or bikes with adaptations.  It's one of the few rides around that can be genuinely called "Disability Friendly" and we'll have support along the entire route to ensure that everyone is looked after.

The whole day (which starts and finishes at Coleg Sir Gar just outside Llandeilo) is "themed" and this includes the music and dress of the day at the Start/Finish and at all three feed stations en-route.  Even the signs will be themed and will add to the atmosphere and enjoyment of the day - we want you to finish the day with a big smile on your face and to mark the event as something to look forward to each year. As well as the three feed stations, all riders will enjoy a hot meal at the finish as well as taking home a memento to remember the day.  The event is run with the full support of British Cycling.
