Event Summary

Event Overview

Get on the wheel of cycling legend "The Flying Scotsman" Graeme Obree at the  Flying Scotsman Sportive.

The 2016 Flying Scotsman Sportive is on Saurday 20th August with the event start & finish at Loudoun Leisure Centre, Galston, KA4 8PD.

The Flying Scotsman Sportive offers an excellent cycling experience to participants with plenty variation in scenery and road contour as the routes wind their way across East Ayrshire and South Lanarkshire mostly on rural roads. The topography may be  challenging but the scenery beautiful. All you need is a well maintained bike and some good preparation to be sure you can enjoy this friendly but challenging sportive. The routes have been chosen by Graeme Obree and take in his personal training roads. Punchy climbs, fast descents, quiet roads and  beautiful scenery make this an ideal event for sportive riders seeking a good challenge in great company, where you can focus on the cycling & camaraderie while taking in the beautiful countryside.

The routes follows roads which take riders from the floor of the Loudoun Valley up sharp climbs to crest the surrounding Ayrshire hills before dropping back down into the valley. The feel of the ride here is akin to some of the Belgian Classic, so if you love those events (minus any cobbles) then this is the event for you.

There are two routes: Old Faithful is a 42 mile blast out to the village of Sorn and back. The Beastie, which takes in 77 miles of spectacular and scenic roads across East Ayrshire and South Lanrakshire is, lets say, appropriatley titled!

The Flying Scotsman Sportive is not a closed road event but  has earned a reputation for being a very welcoming and friendly sportive where there is a great degree of fellowship demonstrated  by all participating riders and a cognisance of other road users and pedestrians.
