Introduced to celebrate the arrival of the Tour of Britain to the area and starting and finishing in the historic market town of Penrith, the ‘Tour de Hartside’ features 60 undulating miles around the beautiful northern Pennines and Eden Valley, including the 5 mile ascent of the iconic Hartside Pass.

From Penrith riders will head to Beacon Edge with stunning views to the left across the town and towards The Lake District. A right turn and the course travels towards and through the lovely Cumbrian villages of Lazonby & Armathwaite before arriving at Castle Carrock to begin an undulating section along the base of the Pennines. Participants will be grateful for the half way feed stop allowing some refreshment before further miles through Langwathby and to Melmerby and the foot of Hartside Pass. Although not steep this five mile ascent is regarded as one of the most challenging in the UK simply because of its distance. An unrelenting climb through it’s lower tree lined slopes with Alpine like switchbacks before opening up and affording stunning views for the final few miles. Cyclists are rewarded for their efforts with the descent back to Melmerby and the remaining few miles back to Penrith.
