Gary Hand wins the 2014 David Bell Memorial Road Race in Falkirk

Posted 29/06/2014 - Kenneth Armstrong

Report: Snowdon Sports

Gary Hand came through a sprint finish of five riders to take victory in the David Bell Road Race in Ayrshire on Sunday.

A 79-mile race featuring a lot of climbing, the race was held in warm, dry conditions and a group of riders showed their intent from the off.

Ten riders broke away after around ten miles of racing and managed to keep their distance from the main bunch for the remainder of the race.

But the demand was too high for half of the group and it split in two with just a couple of miles left to go.

Gary Hand (KTM road-and-trail.com), Andrew Whitehall (Glasgow Wheelers), James McCallum (NFTO), Peter Murdoch (Paisley Velo RT) and Ben Greenwood (Leslie Bike Shop) peeled away to compete for the win.

All five of the riders crossed the line within seconds of each other but it was Hand who timed his attack to perfection to top the podium. Whitehall was just behind him in second and McCallum took third.
