Part of a five-man break which formed on the first of ten laps, Adam Blythe (NFTO Pro Cycling) soloed to an impressive victory in the 140-km finale to the Jersey Festival of Cycling at Gorey.
The Monaco-based 24-year-old, second to Matthieu Boulo in the hill climb which opened the weekend action in Jersey on Friday afternoon, attacked inside the final five kilometres and crested the finishing climb with a clear 14-second advantage over Steve Lampier (Node4 Velosure), who took second place in a sprint from Guernsey’s Commonwealth Games hopeful James McLaughlin, riding for a composite Channel Islands team.
The three broke away along with Ian Bibby (Madison Genesis) and Yanto Barker (Team Raleigh), who instigated the move, on the first ascent of St Catherine’s Hill midway into the opening lap.
The five leaders worked well together to stay clear of a fractured peloton with a group of ten riders, eventually led in by Marcin Bialoblocki (Node4 Velosure), providing the only real opposition but fading over the last two laps.
Bibby and Barker were tailed off on the penultimate lap, and a cramping Lampier and McLaughlin had no answer to Blythe’s attack on the way to his first major win of the year.
McLaughlin, who rides for the French team Guidon Chalettois, had the consolation of winning the King of the Mountains competition.
