Cox climbs to victory in the Bec CC Road Race

Posted 11/05/2014 - James Hughes

Report: Snowdon Sports

Ashley Cox (CC Luton) soloed to victory on a brutal afternoon in Tunbridge for the Bec CC Road Race.

A strong field competed over 78 miles which included six laps of one five mile loop including a climb every lap and then six laps of a 5.5 mile loop including a harder climb each lap.

As expected it was to be a long afternoon for many and after 15 miles a group of six riders escaped the bunch which Cox road across to.

They were soon drawn in by the depleted bunch and for the rest of the race it was a wearing down process with riders dropping off the pace every lap.

With five mile remaining Andrew Feather (Bikeshed-UEX) escaped the bunch over the top of penultimate climb and took Cox with him and the pair built up an advantage.

On the final time up the climb Cox, 31 and from Biggleswade, put the power down and distanced Feather to solo to victory.

The win was Cox’s second of the season after claiming victory in the second stage of the Phil Corley Cycles Tour of Milton Keynes last weekend.

After the race Cox said: “On the final time up the climb I didn’t mean to attack but just put the power down and once I saw I had an advantage I went for it.

“I was waiting to attack on the last time up the climb but once we had a gap over the top with just over a lap to go that was that.”
