James Gullen goes it alone to claim North West Road Race Championship title

Posted 18/05/2014 - Iain Walker

Report: Snowdon Sports

Attacking on a fast descent, James Gullen (Velosure-Girodana RT) rode away from his last remaining rival to secure his first North West regional road race title after seven laps of the testing Oakenclough circuit in Lancashire.

The Lancaster-based 24-year-old had 54 seconds to spare over Jack Pullar (Starley Primal Pro Cycling) at the line with a further gap of 1-25 to the winner’s team-mate Matt Cronshaw in third place.

The leading trio came from an eight-strong break which formed in the early stages of the 76-mile race and stayed together until Cronshaw jumped away on his own with three to go.

Pullar, the national hill climb champion, attacked the rest of the group on the steepest part of the circuit, which features three miles of rolling uphill before the gradient steps up for the final mile which is followed by a long descent, with Gullen the only one able to stay in contact.

Cronshaw was caught after three-quarters of a lap of freedom, and he was first to give way after his earlier effort as the outnumbered Pullar piled on the pressure in an attempt to even things up..

Gullen proved harder to dislodge, however, and sensing that his best chance was to attack on the downhill, he timed his winning move to perfection.

“I was wondering how I was going to beat him – I knew I wouldn’t beat him in a sprint and I can’t drop him on the climbs,” said Gullen, who won the John May Memorial race a week earlier after taking overall victory in the three-day Tour of the North.

“I went on the first bit of the descent, I laid off him a bit into a fast left corner and attacked him in the gutter, and I managed to get away from him.

“It was an interesting race, but having to of us up there pkayed into our hands.

“It’s all going well at the moment. I’ll probably have to do a couple of Tour Series rounds, I’m not suited to it but some of the boys are in Ireland doing the Ras so I’m filling in, and the next big thing is the national championship.”

Chorley 17-year-old Cameron Jeffers (Bill Nickson Cycles RT) outsprinted Joshua Jardine (Summit Cycling) to win the three-lap junior championship, and the supporting Levy Moore Memorial Race for third and fourth categories was won by Peter Brook (Chester RC).
