Gibb secures hat-trick in 2014 Archer Spring Criterium

Posted 27/04/2014 - Stuart Benstead

Report and Images: Graham Robins

Tony Gibb (CSE Racing) out-sprinted Joe Giggins (Richardson-Trek Racing) on the line to win his third successive Archer Spring Criterium in the shortened race at the Hillingdon circuit in West London.

Despite the windy conditions the day stayed dry right until the end of the race; the riders had a huge tail wind up the finish straight which they made use of on each lap, using it to springboard attacks from.

The race was reduced to 35 laps due to a crash in the previous 3/4 cat race when in the middle of the bunch on a bend a tyre blew out bringing down several riders bringing that race to an end with just ten minutes of racing left.

Once the Archer Spring Criterium got underway it did take several laps for the action to start as each attack was quickly pulled back. It wasn’t until the 26th minute of racing when six riders formed up and started to build a lead, but their lead only lasted a few laps before it was pulled back.

The whole bunch then stayed together until nine laps to go when Gibb and Tom Sefton (RP Racing Team) decided to attack but their lead only lasted one full lap.

The next attack to stick saw six riders form up at the front and they managed a lead of 16 seconds but with CSE Racing driving it on the front the race all came back together at the bell.

As the whole peloton came into view along the finish straight it was all over the road and anyone’s race. As the finish beckoned Gibb saw a gap and with his head down clinched it right on the line.
