Northumbria Vikings Go-Ride Racing

Posted 28/03/2014 - Terry Kirkup

The weather was for once quite kind to us, although still quite cool, and there was much excitement amongst the youngsters as Vikings Coach Richie Smith put them through their paces after his warm up and bike/helmet/clothing checks.

Of course the riders didn’t feel the chill like those watching over them! We kept them segregated into age groups apart from one very small young man who had to be moved up a group because of his need for speed, although Richie did manage to control him! This time we did not have the benefit of support from any other local cycle clubs as we had last time in October so we didn’t know what to expect in terms of numbers, but the result was a whole raft of brand new delegates who really enjoyed their day, as did their parents who were full of praise for the organisation and facilities we had to offer.

The day was a great success and our volunteers had learned a lot about organisation and preparation from that first day of trepidation last year to make significant improvements this time. On top of that we may have spotted a few excellent prospects for the future which is what it’s all about.
