The 2017 HSBC UK | BMX National Series kicked off in style this weekend with the opening two rounds offering up two days of fast paced, action packed racing and a couple of upsets.

Championships Women’s competition

On day one in the Championship women’s class all eyes were on defending champion Beth Shriever to see how she would fare.

She rattled through her motos in fine form. However in the final, Shriever was left on the ground on the first corner after a spill, leaving close rival Blaine Ridge-Davis to take an unexpected win. As day two dawned Shriever came out all guns blazing. However it was not to be; a slow start left Shriever racing for a consolation prize of third spot behind Charlotte Green, while Ridge-Davis, smashed the race to take yet another victory.

Ridge-Davis said: "I’ve been training all winter for this and I’ve had it at the back of my mind to do really well, especially in Manchester as I train here quite a lot.

“I’ve been training really hard with Bethany Schriever who got third today. So I’m over the moon to win back to back this weekend. I didn’t really expect it but you’ve got to aim high.

“I changed my tactics this year by starting to really think about myself rather than what the others are doing around me and that’s really paid off as I performed a lot better.

“Words can’t describe how I feel right at this moment. I really looking forward to the next round in Birmingham and see what I can do there.”

Men’s Superclass competition

In the men’s Superclass it was junior Kye Whyte who had plenty to celebrate this weekend.

Despite some fierce rivalry chasing him hard to the line in his moto and eventually the final, Kye took a convincing win.

The action was again exciting on day two with Whyte pushed all the way in the final by his closest rivals Billy Luckhurst, Ross Cullen and his older brother Tre.

As it was, Kye edged his brother out of the final to pick up his second win of the class.

He said: "That was an awesome final and topped a fantastic weekend. Yesterday in round one I got first in the Superclass and then second overall in the junior men, so that was pretty decent.

“Then today I made the Superclass and junior finals and just won the Superclass again, just edging my brother to the line. Billy and Ross were pretty tough competition and obviously my brother was too.”

Brother Tre added: “My brother is in the junior class and I’m in the elite class. He races really well, but there are not many chances that we can race against each other without a lot of fast people in the background, so he was just chasing me down and got me.

“He’ll probably never let me forget that he beat me here, but that’s okay as I’ll get him next time.”
