Velo Club Melyd hosted Round 2 of the North Wales Road Race Series on the 7th and 8th May. This event saw 80 riders competing over 2 days in a 3 stage race.
Stage 1 on Saturday morning was a 1.5Hrs criterium race around the Marsh Tracks Circuit won by Kirk Vickers (Rhino Velo Race Team).
Stage 2 In the afternoon was the infamous Rhuallt Hill Climb Time trial. Won by Dexter Hurlock (Kibosh) with an impressive 5min 3 seconds.
Stage 3 was held on Sunday at the popular Denbigh 9 Mile Circuit. Riders completed 6 laps before finishing with a short but challenging hill sprint. The final weekend race was won by Dexter Hurlock (Kibosh) who also won the overall race after 3 stages.
The race weekend was a huge success for the club receiving positive feedback from both riders and race officials. Events like this are never possible without the help from volunteers who freely give up their time over a weekend and help organise and support events such as this particular one.
Simon Parkinson, the event organiser shared his thoughts on putting on the two-day event with VC Melyd: "It`s great to have the support from local Commissaires Welsh Cycling, NEG, and CSAS marshals to make sure the race is conducted and managed appropriately and to ensure we have all the correct communication and safety equipment in place.
Although the weekend event`s ran very smoothly it must be said that event management doesn’t come without its challenges. Planned surfacing works on the route leading up to the event and emergency works which included some temporary lights all needed attention before and during the race from myself.
Working together with the Local Authority and North Wales Police we were able to co-ordinate the resurfacing works early in the week and arrange for extra cleaning works to remove any loose chippings. We were also able to work closely with the traffic management company who helped co-ordinate the traffic light system so that the race could cruise straight through the traffic lights every time we passed.
All in all this has been a great experience for myself and again I can only thank those involved in supporting this event, I am looking forward to the next round of the event in a couple of weeks."
