Elinor Barker wins Omloop van Borsele

Junior cyclist Elinor Barker claimed the overall win at EPZ Omloop van Borsele this weekend, retaining her lead in all three stages. There was a field of 106 Junior Women competing in Holland, with Wales represented by a team of 5 Junior Women, Elinor Barker, Amy Hill, Rebecca Hunt, Hayley Jones and Amy Roberts..

Elinor won the 13.2km time trial on Friday evening, with a time of 19:01.32 with a clear 7 second lead. Amy Roberts came in 5th, Amy Hill 22nd, Hayley Jones 42nd and Rebecca Hunt 55th. Elinor was also top of the Points competition after her Time Trial event.

Stage Two on Saturday was raced over 72.6km and saw Amy Roberts, Hayley Jones and Elinor come down in a crash in the peloton just 200 metres from the finish line, but Rebecca Hunt was the first Welsh rider over the line. Wales also remained at the top of the team competition with Elinor Barker still in the red jersey going into the final stage on Sunday. Lucy Garner, riding for Great Britain won the stage.

Stage Three was raced over 72.4km where Elinor was the top Welsh finisher in 16th place, registering the same time as stage winner Lucy Garner. Elinor also retained the red jersey and won the General Classification for the tour. Team Wales finished 4th in the team competition, above Great Britain who came just behind in 5th. Elinor Barker and Amy Roberts both finished inside the top 10. This was a great result for the junior women team at their first race of 2012 representing Wales.
