Volunteers required at all eight venues to be a part of Britain's premier televised city centre cycle race Series

The Halfords Tour Series are now recruiting for volunteers to support their team-based city centre cycle racing events this summer.

The calendar of eight cycle races is action-packed. Bringing the thrills, and spills, of professional cycling up close to thousands of spectators at every venue. With emphasis on teams rather than individual riders, ten top British teams battle it out for the coveted Halfords Tour Series title.

Beginning on Tuesday 24th May, the races are every Tuesday and Thursday throughout May and June, with events taking place at Durham, Aberystwyth, Peterborough, Colchester, Stoke-on-Trent, Oldham, Woking and Canary Wharf.

Volunteers will be needed from approximately 13.00 onwards at each venue to fulfill a variety of roles. The main duty being marshalling the circuit at crossing points and other strategic locations.

"I'd like to thank everyone who volunteers to be a part of this year's Halfords Tour Series," said Series Director, Mick Bennett. "Volunteers are an integral part of cycling in this country, and without people giving up their time to assist in the running of events there would not be such a diverse range of cycling events.

"I'd like to think that everyone who volunteers with The Halfords Tour Series goes away proud of what they've been a part of, for volunteering allows members of the public to get close to the action and say they were an important part of The Halfords Tour Series."

As a thank you for their support every Halfords Tour Series volunteer will receive a goody bag from the organisers. With this year's star volunteer receiving a VIP Experience for two to The Tour of Britain in September.

To apply to be a volunteer at this year's Halfords Tour Series, email info@thetour.co.uk stating the venue(s) which you wish to volunteer, as well as your full name and a contact telephone number, putting the name of the venue at which you wish to volunteer in the subject line of the email.

The Halfords Tour Series kicks off at Durham on Tuesday 24th May, with highlights on ITV4 the following evening, Wednesday 25th May, at 20:00. For more information visit: www.tourseries.co.uk

Halfords Tour Series comes to Wales

Posted: 14/04/11

The Halfords Tour Series will make it's debut in Wales on the 26th May on the streets of Aberystwyth. Britains top pro's will battle it out on Aberyswyth's Seafront Circuit with support races for Senior, Junior and Youth riders prior to the main event.

"Olympic cyclists to race in Aberystwyth"

The newly formed Aberystwyth Cycling Partnership have succeeded in bringing televised cycle racing to the streets of the town this spring as the Halfords Tour
Series arrives in Wales for the first time.

The race will feature as the culmination of a full day of cycle related events and activities in the town centre to be featured on ITV4's Halfords Tour Series cycle race program.

Olympians Ed Clancy, Andrew Tennant, Rob Hayles and Steven Burke will take their places on the start line on May 26th. Former Paris-Roubaix winner Magnus Backstedt will also feature, backed up by local rider Gruff Lewis who will ensure a large 'home' crowd at the event.

The major coup for the town has come about thanks to a unique partnership between some of the main organisations in the county of Ceredigion.

Along with Aberystwyth Town Council, the Aberystwyth Cycling Partnership consists of Aberystwyth University, Ystwyth Cycling Club, Ceredigion County Council, and Tourism Partnership Mid Wales. These bodies have worked tirelessly over the last few months, attracting support from Continental Bicycle Tyres along the way who's UK headquarters are based in the town.

The hour-long race will run on a one-kilometre circuit within the town (soon to be confirmed), but it is already known the course will include part of the promenade. The race will then be featured on TV ‘as live' the following evening (Friday 27th May) at the prime time slot of 7pm on ITV4.

Other events planned by the Aberystwyth Cycling Partnership during the day include a full amateur race program of events from Ystwyth Cycling Club for locals and visitors, from Under 8's up to over 40's, along with a local trader challenge race and races between local schoolchildren.

The promenade will be transformed to recreate the spirit of the Tour de France that is famed for its publicity caravan, which precedes the cycle racing. Stalls and exhibitors will ensure a festival atmosphere, including the Wales True Taste Kitchen who will offer sample produce from local Welsh companies. Hybu Cig Cymru are also supporting the expo and will be on hand to promote balanced diets via their recipe books for children amongst other free giveaways that they will offer.

Commenting on the importance of the Aberystwyth Cycling Partnership to the regeneration of the town, Aberystwyth University Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Martin Jones noted:
"A report produced by Ekosgen, of Glasgow, on the Economic Impact of the 2010 Halfords Tour series, has highlighted the significant economic benefits of this event. Overnight visitors for the 10 town events ranged from 900 (Portsmouth) to 5000 (Exeter), and day visitor numbers reached 12,000 for Exeter, 9,000 (Chester), and 5,000 (Durham). Net local expenditure for Aberystwyth is projected at over £200,000.00, Aberystwyth is the only town in Wales for 2011, and we have also secured a contract for 2012, which is the Olympic year. This event is, therefore, of considerable strategic importance to Aberystwyth and the locality".

Private sponsorship deals for both the main event and support races are available. Organisers will soon provide details of a business breakfast event for businesses to come and see how they can get involved and benefit from this major event.
