GB Endurance Riders get acquainted with Danish Track
After arriving the day before, Saturday (March 20) saw the endurance riders in the Great Britain cycling team find their legs on the Danish track which will be used for the Track Cycling World Championships starting March 24. With four days to go to the start of competition, the track centre was a hive of activity as riders from nations around the world went through their final preparations for the biggest track competition of the year.

Head track coach, Shane Sutton, arm in a sling after hurting his collarbone, explained that the session was all about getting used to the track. The changes in the Team Pursuit for example, are different for this track than the ones at Manchester. “It’s the first day on the track and everyone is stretching their legs. The boys seems to be a little bit fruity at times which is not what they should be doing today but they’ll be fine.”

The session saw Dan Hunt take charge of the men’s group while Olympic champion (Team Pursuit) Paul Manning, at his first World Championships as a GB coach, was guiding the women during their session on the boards. During the 90 minute session, each group did four efforts including a long warm-up.

For the men, there were five team pursuiters and Chris Newton who was back at the track where he won his World Points title in 2002. Chris will be racing the Points and Scratch races in Copenhagen. For the women, there were the three women for the Team Pursuit (Lizzie Armistead, Wendy Houvenaghel and Joanna Rowsell) as well as European Scratch race champion Anna Blyth.

After each effort, the coaches sat down with the riders and went through the ride while the two mechanics, Ernie Feargrieve and Mark Ingham were kept busy keeping tyres clean and changing gears between efforts. Meanwhile, away from the track, the Sprint squad arrived from Manchester and after the 90 minute flight, had lunch and then did some roller work to get the journey out of the legs. They’ll be on the track early on Sunday morning for their first look at the newly cleaned boards.
