Go-Ride is entering a new era for Scottish Cycling which is conveyed in our theme – A New Horizon.  Historically, the Go-Ride focus in Scotland was on grass roots youth coaching and an accreditation process. The new era of Go-Ride now encompasses the entire youth development pathway. This includes: coaching, racing, participation, talent development, club governance, club structures, volunteering, and of course the development of young people.

The conference will represent the diversity and breadth of the Go-Ride programme and provide a mix of informative and practical sessions.  There are numerous workshops which delegates will be able to choose from depending on their interests and role within their club.

We will have workshops ranging from club development ideas and good practice to performance pathways and everything in between.

Scottish Cycling has an important role in ensuring that we support clubs to provide an environment that has the health and wellbeing of its members at the heart. We have a particular responsibility, along with other national organisations, for the wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults and as such we will also have a specific workshop on Safeguarding and Wellbeing in sport and we recommend that clubs encourage their Wellbeing and Protection Officer, club committee members and coaches to attend

Welcome

Scottish Cycling CEO, Craig Burn, and former sportscotland Young Person Panel member, Scottish Cycling Junior Performance Development rider and Edinburgh Road Club cyclist, Alex Ball, will open the Conference and introduce you to Scottish Cycling’s 2019-2023 strategy, which has clubs and young people at its heart.

Go-Ride – A New Horizon with Vicky Strange, Head of Development, Scottish Cycling

Go-Ride is entering a new era for Scottish Cycling which is conveyed in our theme – A New Horizon.  Historically, the Go-Ride focus in Scotland was on grass roots youth coaching and an accreditation process. The new era of Go-Ride now encompasses the entire youth development pathway and this part of the day will provide an overview of the Go-Ride programme including: coaching, racing, participation, talent development, club governance, club structures, volunteering, and the development of young people.

Young People Leading in Sport with Kirsty Ewen BBC Sport’s Personality of the Year Unsung Hero Winner

Young people are the future and providing opportunities for young people to get involved in different roles in cycling is central to Scottish Cycling’s 2019-2023 strategy. We will hear from young people about their experiences of leading in sport and the impact which this has had in their life as well as hearing about the launch of an exciting new Scottish Cycling project for young people.

Scottish Cycling’s Young People’s Panel with Fraser Johnston, Regional Development Officer, Scottish Cycling

This session will launch Scottish Cycling’s Young People’s Panel which is an exciting and unique opportunity for a young person to have their say in shaping the future of the sport in Scotland and inspiring others to do the same.

Being a part of the panel will provide young people with opportunities to grow their skillset, get to meet new people and contribute towards the strategic objectives of Scottish Cycling – to lead, grow, partner and support across the country to develop a Nation of Cyclists.

Workshop Session One

Option 1: Talent Environments with Dr Russell Martindale, Associate Professor, Edinburgh Napier University

There has been a growing interest in research examining the initiation or adoption of talent development (TD) programmes to achieve sporting excellence.  Talent Development is about providing the most appropriate learning environment to realise athletes’ athletic potential.  This is important, because evidence has clearly shown that innate talents are not automatically transformed into word-class performers without appropriate TD experiences. Rather, athletes need to go through a long-term developmental path to gain key attributes to realise their athletic potential. This implies that TD environments would benefit from being well planned, holistic and evidence based in order to successfully facilitate long term athlete progression.

Option 2: Growing capacity without losing control with Jamie McBrearty, Director, YMindset

Any club that adapts a growth mindset culture can position itself to thrive.  Strong leadership, continuous learning, and innovation are key to thriving clubs in any sport.  A growth mindset will move your club forward and position your club, its members, and its leaders for growth, whilst build capacity and resilience for success in the future.

We will deliver a fun, challenging and thought provoking workshop through an inspiring and engaging experience.  Participants will discuss mindsets, reflect on their club's culture for growth, and leave with tools to support building capacity throughout their club through embedding growth mind set language and behaviours with club leaders, volunteers, coaches, parents and members.

Workshop Session Two

Option 1: Practical Coaching Observations with Scottish Cycling Coaches

Scottish Cycling coaches will be delivering live coaching sessions where delegates will have the opportunity to observe these sessions in action. There will be three different sessions running concurrently that span the youth pathway from young children up to adolescents. Delegates will rotate around the groups to observe each session. This is a unique opportunity to watch, discuss, reflect, critique and learn from another coach’s delivery. This learning process will be facilitated by an assistant coach who will help to explain the underpinning theory and what is happening and why.

Option 2: Club Legal Structures identifying what’s right for you with Kelly Fraser, Associate, Harper Macleod LLP

The vast majority of clubs are voluntary organisations and this workshop, delivered by law firm Harper Macleod LLP, will deal primarily with the issues facing voluntary organisations regarding their legal status. This workshop will provide an overview of the range of legal structures available to clubs and focus on providing guidance to clubs on identifying the most suitable one for them, as well as providing a brief overview of applicable statutory duties on individuals involved in running such structures.

NEW Safeguarding and Wellbeing Standards in Scotland: An Overview with Sophie Warburton Development Manager, Scottish Cycling

The aim of Safeguarding in Sport is to help ensure children stay safe and have fun while taking part in sport. Sport can have a very positive influence on children, especially when activities are led by people who place their welfare first. All adults working with children should know how to respond to a child who may turn to them for help. This workshop will explore training and resources which are developed to build people’s knowledge and confidence in this area.

Workshop Session Three

Option 1: Learning through Play with Doug MacDonald, Coach and Pathway Developer, Scottish Canoe Association

In this session, Doug will take you through some recent work that the performance team at the Scottish Canoe Association have been doing around the use of deliberate play in progressing paddlers. Doug will take you through some of the principles of using play to progress athletes, highlight some of the learning that has taken place from recent work and give you ideas on how you can use deliberate play to accelerate the progression of your performers.

Option 2: Revolution to Evolution – A Journey of Club Development with Jamie MacDonald, National Club Manager, Scottish Athletics

Over the last eight years athletics in Scotland has seen a significant growth and development in all areas – across participation, clubs and performance. This session will outline the key stages in the journey and highlight progression in club development in athletics in Scotland sharing valuable learning and ideas. We will explore this growth, including the leading Club Together Project where clubs involved in the project have seen on average over 70% growth in their membership. Within the session we will explore various examples of club models from across Scotland.
