Team Royal London 360 Isle of Man's Youth League

Story posted July 30, 2010; by Dot Tilbury

Considering that quite a few of the regulars were away on their summer holidays, there was a good turn out of 278 competitors at the NSC last Tuesday night for round 15 of Team Royal London 360 Isle of Man's youth league. A break in the recent spell of wet weather allowed the evening's racing to be held in surprisingly good conditions.
In the novices class Sophia Littlewood powered away from the field to notch up her fifth successive win. Sam Cunningham was a safe second and Joel Garrett beat Amy Quayle to the line for third. Emma Stratford edged out Mia Littlewood, Lily Griffiths and impressive newcomer Jacob Kenny for fifth, with Matilda Clague outsprinting Tyler Whyment for ninth. The fast finishing Lilli-Mae Doyle came from behind to snatch 11th from Ealish Cook, Finloe Gelling and Ryan Blair.
Harry Kneen recorded his tenth victory in the born 2005 & later category, crossing the line with a clear advantage over Nathan Cannell in second place. Niall Colquitt passed Joseph Humphrey on the finish straight to grab third and Joshua Cottrell came home alone for fifth. First-timer Corey Peters did very well to outgun Aaron Christian, Robert Docherty, Zachary Dowson, Frank Kinnish and Jack Keenan in the dash for sixth.
In the born 2004 event Dillon Dowson dropped arch rival Zac Walker on the last lap to pocket maximum points for an eighth time. The ever improving Ralf Holden got the better of Joshua Dudley in the fight for the final place on the podium and a speedy James Devereau caught Cameron Dudley on the line for equal fifth. Joshua Kelly overtook Nathan Slack to take seventh and Ben Boyle held off leading girl Mia Worthington for ninth.
Jake Wilson got the verdict over Jack Christian in the sprint at the end of the born 2003 race. Third placed Percy Hampton lost contact with the two frontrunners on the final circuit, while Jonty Bregazzi and Matthew Black could not be separated in the battle for fourth. Tyler Hannay, who was making his racing debut, was a fine sixth ahead of Thomas Skillicorn, Darcy Cain and Jack Collister.
A late injection of speed gave Charlie Gibson the advantage over Will Corkill in the closing stages of the born 2002 class. Aaron Lund beat Nicholas Kissack to the line for third and top girl Blae Cain stayed clear of chasers Joshua Mills, Sam Corlett and Charlie Moss for fifth. Liam Crook was ninth and Caitlin Christian took the bunch sprint to round off the top ten.
Born 2001 winner Max Walker was the strongest in a leading group of eight riders. Juan Kneen and Adam Scarffe came in together for second and third followed by Tosh Teare, Emma Draper, Conor Gelling and Cullen Gell. A jammed chain and a collision with Chloe Crellin robbed round 14 winner Tyler Cain of a possible top three finish.
Ben Christian came out on top in the four-man sprint that decided the outcome of the born 2000 class. Tom Murray, Sam Batey and Thomas Bostock completed the top four, with Ciara Sowerby the first girl in eighth spot.
Matthew Draper continued his winning ways in the born 1999-97 age group. Phoebe Ferguson made a brave attempt to stay with him, before having to give way and settle for second. Breesha Quirk led Sam Mills and Liam McCann in for third, while Abby Quirk was too fast for Holly Black And Tara Ferguson in the gallop for sixth.
A committed attack on the penultimate lap gave William Draper pole position in the under 10 racing bikes. Thomas Bostock just held off Charlie Gibson in the sprint for second and Luke Murray headed the main bunch over the line for fourth. Sam Batey and Max Walker completed the top six leader board.
In the under 12 racing bikes newly crowned British champion Owen Dudley fended off a strong challenge from Matthew Draper to further strengthen his bid for the overall honours. Michael Moss and Conor Davies, who had both helped to establish the winning break, were third and fourth respectively and Callum Clague rode well to pip Dan Watterson for fifth. Kaitlin Slack took the girls' prize in ninth place.
Unusually, the under 16 racing bike event ended in a 14 strong bunch sprint, with Jake Kelly taking the chequered flag ahead of Nicholas Corlett, Luke Simpson, Joshua Knights, Alex Haddock and Matthew Davies, who was the first of the under 14 riders. Anna Christian hung onto the group to pick up the girls award in 14th place.
