When a group of three riders went clear of the group at the end of lap one, it was the eventual winner, Stuart Reid (Team Herbalife/Whellbase.co.uk) and Dave Cook (Altura) who had previously podiumed in the men’s National Road Race Championships in 1996; that recognised the danger and with a combined effort bridged across to the leading group.

James Gullen (Wallis Cycles), Sam Jackson (Herbalife/Wheelbase.co.uk) and Bryan Pool (Annan) form the early break and battle up Docker in to the head wind.

At the bottom of Sunny Bank on lap 4, Cook realising the danger of having two Team Herbalife/Wheelbase riders in the group, put in an enormous attack, rapidly distancing the group from where a lamentable cry was heard and only Reid was able to respond. He caught Cook by the time they crested the summit but was shaking his head with disbelief.

The final ascent of Sunny Bank to the finish saw Reid go clear on the last bend and take a resounding victory raising his hand high after winning the same race in 2005.
