Report: Upavon Winter Series 2010 Race 5

Event: 6th February 2010 | Source: Army Cycling Union | Event Information and Results

Full report and images from the latest in the Upavon series.

Conditions

The weather had improved with the sun in evidence for the race. The northerly wind did keep the temperatures down and the legwarmers on. The track was in good condition despite the poor weather other than a glider tractor turning over the previous day causing a temporary chicane to be introduced.

E123 race

The E/1/2/3 race started off with a strong attack of Rowan Horner and Harry Bulstrode, although the 30 second gap between the bunches had all but disappeared. After 2 laps the leaders had a 30 second gap with the chasing group starting to split, several laps further and this lead had been pegged to 30 seconds by the following bunch of 4 which had split from the front of the bunch. With 40 minutes raced the leading groups came together and then immediately split with Rowan Horner and Simon Broooks going off the front verbally encouraging each other to work together. The bunch were riding around at a very leisurely pace sometimes being behind the 3/4 race and sometimes in front. Tim Knight as Chief Com managed to split the races but it did detract from the race. With 1 hour raced the leaders and riders off the front had split into the leading 3 with a following pair at 30 seconds and a further 3 seconds 20 seconds after that. The final sprint had Simon Brooks sitting up for team mate Rowan Horner to take the victory.

Cat 3/4 race

The 3/4 cat race started at an electric pace almost catching the E/1/2 race for 30 seconds, some of the slower E/1/2/3 riders caught a ride with the larger bunch. It took the best part of 50 minutes for the E/1/2/3 to gain a significant advantage on the 3/4 race. The slowing in pace allowed Lewis Carter and Ralph King to breakaway and gained 30 seconds over the bunch and were working well sharing turns. With 1 hour raced there was a group including James Marshall, David Phillips and Ralph Carter with a comfortable 30 second lead over the bunch which was all together. These riders worked well together and it was David Phillips who got the victory over Ralph Carter who had inadvertently and accidentally celebrated his victory 20 metres short of the line! Good luck next week Ralph.
