Imperial Winter Series - Round 1

Hillingdon Circuit,  Saturday 5th December 2009
Report: Imperial Racing Team

The opening day of the 4th Imperial Winter Series at the Hillingdon circuit saw a huge entry for all races on a dry day. We saw some well controlled riding and acute awareness of tight bunched racing. For some it was their first experience of bunched racing on a closed circuit with only one minor incident in the first few laps; although many solo attempts were made to break away both races finished in bunch sprints - the 4th category creating a judging nightmare as they caught back the 3rd cat race in the run in to the line. The standard of racing was very high and a great improvement of previous years, a credit to all the riders.

The E123 race saw 68 starters, with a group of three go off the front in the first 8km consisting of Steve Golla (Sigma Sport), Conor Dunne (Glendene CC) and John Heaton-Armstrong (Fit-For) who were joined by Henry Furniss (Wyndymilla). Such was their strength and class all four working steadily together pulled away from the main group with a gap extending to just under a minute.

They were never in danger of being caught. In the run into the finish Steve Golla took a flyer and won comfortably, it was extremely close for second with new Glendene signing Conor Dunne just holding off Henry Furniss with John Heaton-Armstrong several lengths back. In the closing stages James Stuart (Norwood Paragon) and Paul Alderson (South Western RC) broke away from the main group and maintained a slight advantage. Paul is back this year with an eye perhaps on improving on his overall position of 3rd in the ‘08/09 series. A great start to the series.
