Castle Combe Summer Series

A round up of events Week 11 through to Week 14, Thanks to Andy Cook

Week 14; 06/08/2009

What a wet night! It was relentless. It stopped raining as the racing finished to leave a beautiful sunset!

Despite awful conditions the numbers continue to be impressive across all age categories with the Youth categories competing as strongly as ever. Andrew Wheatley won the sprint from David barber and Lance Hutchison. In the Under 10’s Sam Tillett and James Tillett took it in turns to attack Pfeiffer Georgi who did remarkably well to take second in the sprint finish. Having come off on one of the tight bends in the wet Megan James resplendent in her National Champion of Wales jersey picked herself up and bravely fought back to 4th place.

The Under 12’s was another very keenly fought race with Harry Lock winning the sprint from Ffion James and Ashley Hutchison making 3rd place. The standard of riding in the Under 12’s and under 10’s is great to watch with some serious attacking racing every week. The Under 14’s started with the Under 16’s as there were only 4 riders for the Under 14’s. Once again Jack Reed made it look quite easy in the sprint with Luke Davies making 2nd with two newcomers in Aaron Baker and Joe Carter taking 3rd and 4th place. The Under 16 race was another ferocious sprint with Richard Seymour of the Cardiff Ajax winning from the ever present Dan Marshall and winner in previous weeks Terry Chance from Worcester St Johns.

The senior event was reduced by two laps due to the conditions and the 4th cats again held out until just less than 1 lap left before being caught. It looked as if they may well stay clear this week until some fierce attacking from the E/1/2 group that had amalgamated with the 3rd’s. In the ever increasing gloom the inevitable bunch sprint occurred with Ian Rees making it look all so easy from Hugh Wilson Forza Cycles. Jon Pain who has scored in almost every round managed to bag another shed load of points for third from Grant Bayton. The use of the camera to help identify the lower positions was imperative and has led to the top ten positions being available most nights.

Next week is the last night of this series and we hope to conduct a small presentation between the Youth races and the senior races honouring the leading Youth riders and thanking the key helpers. Senior riders who have scored points will have their prize money distributed once the league has finished and the final overall tables completed.

Week 12 - 23/07/2009

Another really wet night means we are probably paying for the first ten weeks being so dry! Welsh youngsters don’t seem to mind the rain and whilst many were huddled together keeping dry minutes before the official start time the youngsters continued bombing round warming up in the torrential downpour that lasted throughout the half hour of youth racing. Again numbers were low but Huw Higgins Worral made a good race of the U8 category with usual suspects pushed down a few places with another visitor taking third Andrew Wheatley just behind David Barber. In the U12’s Pfeiffer outsprinted Megan with the Tillett trio filling the next three places. Out on the big circuit Ashley Hutchison resplendent in his new St Raphael kit outsprinted Ffion and Etienne Georgi.

The U14’ & 16’started together as there were only 3 U14 riders. A great race in the U16 category lead to a break away of four riders with a very clos sprint being taken by time triallist Rupert Denny from Jess Wieleckowski and Sean Wheddon. Jack Reed was mixing with the rest of the U16’s and won the sprint for 5th place meaning he won the U14 event from Luke Davies and Angela Eggleton.

In the senior event again the 3rds & 4ths started together due to so few riders. What it missed in quantity though it made up for with quality with some decent 3rd cats and strong 4ths there was every possibility they might stay away particularly as the distance was reduced by two laps to fifteen laps due to weather. However, they didn’t gel well and with five to go the E/1/2 group caught the 3rd’s & 4th’s and whilst there were many attempts to get away it didn’t look like happening until a lap and a half to go when Luke Rowe and Jon Mould both fresh back from the European track championships with well earned medals in their pockets forced a group off the front.

In the sprint Luke won from Jon with Lee Davis taking third from Grant Bayton and Jon Pain. Young Tom Stockdale was the last member of the break to cross the line in 6th with a spirited lone chase by Ben Anstie leading him to 7th whilst super sprinter Ian Rees took the gallop easily from James Lewis and Giles Pidcock

Week 11 -- 16/07/09

I should have kept quiet the previous week as the weather turned with a vengeance for the 11th week of the Castle Combe Summer series with very depleted fields for all races. Due to a major motor racing meeting beingheld the following weekend the usual parking spaces were changed causing a mild amount of confusion!

With the Hutchison family missing the Chippenham U8’s made hay with Lance absent filling the first three places. In the U10’s Pfeiffer Georgi continued her dominance against the other 5 riders.9 riders braved the wet conditions in the U12’s event where they only completed 2 laps of the main circuit due to adverse weather with Emily Haycox keeping the Welsh flag flying beating Rob Higgs and Etienne Georgi into 2nd & 3rd respectively. The U16 & U14 started together as there were only 3 U14 riders and again the distance was reduced from 5 to 4 laps due to conditions. Sean Wheddon won the U16 race from Dan Marshal with Jack Reed getting the better of Sam Roberts and Luke Davies in the U14’s

The distance of the senior race was shortened from 17 to 15 laps with the 4ths and 3rds starting together as there were only just over thirty riders for the whole race. Ian Rees used his devasting sprint to good effect taking another win and a very close sprint for 2nd place was awarded to Simon Snowden of Chippenham from Jon Pain
