Report

Paul Oldham took a fine win at Macclesfield Supercross today galloping away in the final laps from Liam Kileen. The current National Champion looked in top form on the sticky ground as many of the big hitters found the going tough on the sweeping circuit. And, with the National Championships less than two weeks away, a number of other top riders were on show, sharpening up as the big day looms.

After the Youth race, it was the turn of the adults and a huge field took the start line: seniors, vets, juniors and women starting as a bunch heading uphill on the wide field for the opening lap. And it was Oldham and 2010 National Champion Ian Bibby who were soon heading the race with David Fletcher and Liam Kileen sitting in third and forth place respectively. Nick Craig and Tom Last were in a chasing group of four a few seconds back.

The rapid start saw the front runners picking out the back markers by the end of the first lap and the leading four were soon able to build up a useful gap of around twenty seconds over the chasing Craig group.

Oldham and Killen were really beginning to show their strength and by the third lap the pair pulled away from third placed Bibby and Fletcher who were, in turn, well clear of the rest. By the midway point Killeen had opened a small gap over Oldham and Fletcher had been forced to chase down Bibby after an attack and the pair were back together still holding third and fourth positions.

However, Oldham wasn't going to allow Killeen any leeway and the Hope factory star began to reel the Giant rider back in, much to the pleasure of the crowd.

With around fifteen minutes to go Oldham stamped his authority on proceedings with a burst of speed and he soon opened a 30 second gap over Killeen.

A tired looking Bibby who had pulled away impressively from Fletcher a few laps previously saw the Boardman Elite rider storm past him on the hill running up to the putting green and ride away leaving the Motorpoint rider to consolidate his fourth position.

Free from the crashes and mechanicals which have dogged him this season, Oldham kept the pace high and rode across the line to take the victory from a chasing Killeen who had left it just half a lap too late to respond. A hard fought third place went to David Fletcher and an impressived fourth spot went to Ian Bibby who was competing in his first cross race for over twelve months.

In the women's race, Delia Beddis (ViCiOUS VELO) justified her position at the head of the national rankings with a convincing win, leading from the start and finishing a healthy 19 places in front of Diane Lee (Zepnat), with Nikola Butler (Inverse Cyclaim) third.

Rider Interviews

Paul Oldham

I did a bike change and lost some ground over Liam. I thought he may be suffering during the race so I stuck it to him but Liam never gives up, he is so dangerous during the last ten minutes of a race. The race today is obviously different to the Nationals but I think I'm on track. I raced yesterday at South Shields which was a good workout for an hour and winning today was good. My legs are a bit tired but I'm pleased with the result especially racing against the likes of Liam, Ian(Bibby), Nick(Craig) and Dave(Fletcher), good result up against those!

Liam Killeen

I feel better after that. I think I needed to race today, that was really tough hour out there. Paul is obviously the man to beat - he had a lot of seated power today. It would be really nice to win or to medal at the Nationals and things are going well for that but I've got some bigger goals to concentrate on in six months time - but for the time being today was good.

David Fletcher

I started off well and managed to get in the front group for the first few laps but I had a twig caught in my cassette which started to make the gears jump. I lost touch with the front two when I changed bike, I think I had the wrong choice of tyre on the spare for today so I changed back around the mid way point of the race and I started to get myself back up to Bibby. I found a lot of strength towards the end of the race. The training has been going really well recently and it looks like its starting to pay off, my pace is starting to pick up and I'm starting to get close to Paul (Oldham) and he's the man to watch at the Nationals. Today gave me the chance to see where my training is going and see where I have to make improvements

Tom Last

That was tough. Its such a draggy course, its a really good course and it flows well but its hard. It seems to go uphill all the time and if it doesn't go up there's a head wind. Things are looking good for the Nationals, I've had some solid days training for them, the weather this year has helped a lot, it's allowed me to get out on the road instead of the turbo, so its been really good. Paul and Liam seem to be on another level today to the rest of us. I think the Nationals will be an interesting race with Ian (Field) coming over to race but I hope to finish in the top ten.

Nick Craig

I wasn't too happy with my result today. I don't expect to be dancing with the front four but I didn't feel that 'on it' today. I was with a group of good riders today and we had a good race which was enjoyable. The course round here is quite simple and straightforward and it's more of an engine test then anything else. It's pleasing to see the lads are on form for the Nationals and I certainly hope to be a lot nearer than I was today. I'm riding the Seniors at the Nationals, I've never ridden in the vets' jersey so while I'm riding elite I thought I'd give it a go in there.

Ian Bibby

That was fun, I haven't ridden a cross race in over a year. Last season I got ill so that was the end of the season for me. My form isn't too bad, after the Tour of Britain I had nine weeks off because I damaged my shoulder, I've still got to have another operation on it but it isn't too bad, it was ok today. I've just come back from Lanzerote training with Johnny Mcavoy and I've come here a bit tired but it was my first race and I felt ok. I need a few races to loosen my legs up. I don't think I'll be firing at the front at the Nationals but I'd be pretty happy if I was in contention for part of the race, top five would be nice. The Nationals will be my first race for Endura, which is who I'm riding for next year. I'm looking forward to next year, its going to be big.

James Shaw

I was pleased with the win, to beat Billy by that distance is good. I'm putting in a lot of training and I'm coming into form for the Nationals. I'm riding Thornbridge on Saturday and Hopefully I'll be ready for Ipswich.
