Preston Park Youth CC Cyclo-Cross

Promoted by Preston Park Youth Cycle Club, the second round of the London Cyclo-Cross League and first round of the  Sussex League was held at Happy Valley, Woodingdean in Brighton.  In the Under 10s race, it was a close fight between several riders with Tom Ives (Sutton CC) sprinting  away from Toby Anderton (VC Deal) after Ives climbed the final rise full gas and took the victory.

In contrast to the under 10s,  Anthony Anderson (Kingston Wheelers) romped away in the Under 12's race to maintain a huge lead and go on to win the race after lapping most of the field. In the Youth race, local rider, Ashley Dennis (VC Jubilee) showed it’s not just the track where he excels by winning the Under 16s after a sprint finish with his closest rivals. Laura Cheesman from the promoting club Preston Park YCC, won the Under 16 girls.

Seniors
On a sunny day with the brisk northerly wind preventing the marshals from day dreaming, a senior field of 99 riders raced away quickly from the start and it wasn't long before the event became a three way battle at the front. Early on, Taylor Johnstone (second year Junior) led round the Arctic Shorter pair of Matt Holmes and Darren Barclay before settling in just behind them.

These three were followed by a four strong group who stuck together for virtually the whole race, unable to close the gap to the front trio and losing time as each lap passed by. With two Arctic Shorter riders for company, it seemed that Taylor may be outwitted, however he proved strong enough to stay in the mix until the finale where he was unable to hold off the strong surge from Matt Holmes who won the race.

Holmes won the race in 54.02 from Taylor Johnstone with Darren Barclay a whisker behind. The chasing group came in over a minute back.
