Work has begun at Carmerthen Velodrome to enable the facility to return to a training and competition venue for all cyclists.

Three sample surfaces have been laid on the track to allow testing to begin. All surfaces comply with skid resistance but the developers will now be looking at the durability of each surface under varying weather conditions.

It is hoped that the new surface will be laid in April 2017, with the hope that the facility will return to full use in 2017. Once complete, the velodrome will be run and maintained by Carmarthen Town Council.

Investment

In 2015, Carmarthenshire County Council’s Executive Board agreed to support the regeneration of the historic velodrome in Carmarthen with a capital funding contribution of £286,000. The funding has enabled a further £296,000 grant from Sport Wales, and will see the velodrome at Carmarthen Park become a regional centre of excellence for cycling.

The track, which first opened in 1900, will be used as a training and competition venue for cyclists, with an upgraded track and safety fencing to bring it back into use.

Further updates on th edevelopment of Carmarthen Velodrome will follow as progress is made.
