SYHA Hostelling Scotland (SYHA) is researching the need, desire and best locations to improve its offering to mountain bikers across Scotland.

Working together with Developing Mountain Biking in Scotland (DMBinS), a partnership project hosted within Scottish Cycling, SYHA has created a survey to gauge opinion from mountain bikers as to how they can improve the main reasons why riders would or wouldn’t visit youth hostels.

In return, SYHA is offering one lucky respondent two nights’ accommodation including continental breakfast for up to four persons at any Scottish youth hostel. SYHA is a not-for-profit organisation with accommodation based in some of the most stunning scenery in Scotland enabling you to explore new areas or to return to your favourite location.

Donna Thompson, Sales & Business Development Manager with SYHA, explains the need to gather this information:

“We are keen to deliver a better service to all our customers and we recognise that mountain biking is an activity which is growing all the time. We believe that this survey will help us understand what we can do to improve our youth hostels to accommodate mountain bikers, plus identify which locations we should focus our efforts on.  We are interested in hearing about experiences of mountain bikers who have previously stayed at an SYHA youth hostel and also from riders who haven’t visited us, to find out what would encourage them to do so.”

Mountain biking contributes an estimated £150m per annum to the Scottish economy and is one of the top five destinations in the world for the activity.

Graeme McLean, project manager for DMBinS, explains why Scotland is gaining a world-wide reputation for mountain biking and why the accommodation sector has vital role in maintaining and enhancing this reputation:

“Spread throughout Scotland are some of the best purpose built trail centres in the world and with our fantastic access legislation mountain bikers can create amazing adventures using our network of formal and informal paths and trails. However, the riding itself - although important - isn’t the only thing which contributes towards Scotland being a world-class destination. We need the whole supply chain to provide a great service to mountain bikers and to showcase Scotland through our food and drink, architecture, culture and other activities Scotland has to offer. The accommodation sector plays an important role in providing a world-class level of service for our visitors. When we heard that SYHA were keen on investigating the suitability of their hostels for bikers, we felt we could help out. We hope that the survey is the start of process of providing improved accommodation for mountain bikers visiting youth hostels in Scotland.”
