15 September was the second Otley Sportive, a ride that is of a social nature and inclusive for riders of all abilities with a 14 mile, 38 mile and 69 mile ride on offer.
With over 300 riders at this weekend’s event, it more than doubled entries from last year! The sun was out and all the riders were ready for what was set to be a great day of riding. Greg Mulholland was alongside Luke at the start line ready to set off the long route riders bright and early, showing his support for the event and the sport overall. The medium and short routes set off not long after, and everyone was soon on the road.
The medium and long routes both had some serious climbs in, providing a challenge to the riders, some relished this and some felt this was over the top. Something next year the organisers are keen to balance out: “In 2013 we will look at the medium route being shorter and offering more flat and rolling hills rather than big climbs”
The long route however was a challenge which most riders really enjoyed; with the sun shining a good riding day was with us. Overall from speaking to the riders they were very positive about the ride, £10 entry fee to a sportive with plenty of tea, coffee and cake at the end with £2000 going to charity (approximately half the entry fee) this is an event that will continue to be successful and one that will continue to grow and improve.
I spoke to a few cyclists for whom this was their first sportive – they really enjoyed the atmosphere and were really impressed with the organisation. It was a real opportunity for them to get involved in the sportive scene with really friendly staff and riders alike.
The organisers were and continue to listen to feedback that was being actively sought in order to improve the ride in a hope that they will create a real jewel in the British Cycling Sportive calendar crown.
