Lucy Garner takes another European Junior Title in Portugal

British Cycling Olympic Development rider Lucy Garner claimed the Junior Women's scratch race title last night with a thrilling finish which also saw team mate Amy Roberts lead the pair into the final lap. Amy narrowly missed out on bronze but the race saw a great ride by both athletes.

Newly crowned European Junior Kilo Champion, Matt Rotherham proceeded thorough the sprint rounds and ended up fighting for the gold medal in the Junior men's Sprint. Rotherham, who qualified in 10.619 seconds, raced against German Ricahrd Assmus for gold but the German, who had qualified fastest in 10.510 overcame Rotherham 2-0 forcing him to settle for the silver medal.

Academy athlete Becky James was overjoyed to be back on the podium with a bronze in the U23 womens sprint after beating Elena Brezhniva of Russia in the minor final.

To round off a successful eveing on the boards in Anadia, Chris Latham powered to a silver medal in the Junior men's Scratch race. Latham waited until just the right moment in the race to launch an impressive sprint from the back of the field with one lap to go to claim the silver medal.

Today sees the start of the Omnium for both U23 and Junior women as well as the 4th event in both men's omnium categories. This will be followed by Becky James and Victoria Williamson in the U23 500m TT. We will be reporting on all the action from Portugal in our daily round ups throughout the championships.
