British Cycling has today named the long list of selected riders who will represent Great Britain at the forthcoming UCI Road World Championships, taking place in Ponferrada, Spain from 21 – 28 September 2014.

Following a successful summer in Glasgow for the home nation riders, current Commonwealth road race champions Lizzie Armitstead and Geraint Thomas have made selection for the road races, whilst Commonwealth time trial champion Alex Dowsett and last year’s world silver medallist Sir Bradley Wiggins will contest for a place in the men’s time trial.

In the under-23 squad, Dan McLay who won stage three of this year’s Tour de l’Avenir has made selection as has Tao Geoghegen Hart who finished 10th overall. In the junior squad, British Cycling’s Olympic Development Programme riders Matt Gibson and Grace Garner have both had strong seasons on the road so far this year and will represent the Great Britain Cycling Team in both the junior road race and time trial events.

Shane Sutton said: “I’m pleased with the long-list of riders we have selected for the UCI Road World Championships, and we’re fortunate to have a strong pool of riders from which to make our final selection. It’s good to see Annie Last and Alice Barnes from the Olympic mountain bike squad named on the long-list as they could both prove to be assets to Lizzie given the hilly nature of the course, and it shows how we’re developing riders on the programmes.”

The final selection for the UCI Road World Championships will be announced in due course.
