The sixth round of British Cycling Women’s Road Series will head to Northumberland this weekend; a 106km race of three gruelling laps, taking in the famous Ryals climbs.

The Curlew Cup is now in its fifth year and has been won by some big names since its inception in 2012 including Dame Sarah Storey and Katie Archibald.

Ones to watch

The series is currently being led by Team Ford Ecoboost rider Nicola Juniper who has two series wins to her name in 2014 and 2015.

Two victories in the series to date and a second place behind Grace Garner in last week’s Essex Giro have put the 34-year-old in a commanding position at the top of the standings.

Garner will be riding in the Aviva Women’s Tour this week but teammate Dame Sarah Storey is in the Podium Ambition Pro Cycling’s ranks, having won in the inaugural race in 2012.

Eleanor Dickinson was sitting in second behind Juniper in the overall standings before the Giro but will need to recoup some points after missing the two-day event.

The Drops Cycling Team rider recently won the British Cycling National Junior Women’s Road Race in Lincoln, tacking the infamous Michaelgate cobbled climb eight times, so should be well suited to the steep gradients of the Curlew Cup course.

Wiggle rider leads the peloton

Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling team will be competing in the Women’s Tour this week, meaning the 2013 British junior road race champion Anna Christian will be going it alone in Northumberland.

The course

Riders will compete over a 22.3-mile circuit which will see them tackle the formidable Ryals climbs three times.

This is a change from previous editions and the new, tougher route is hoped to add a further level of difficultly and excitement to the race.
