To help ensure our events go smoothly across the year, it takes an army of volunteers that work tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure events go smoothly and members of the public are safe when events are taking place on Welsh roads.

Our accredited CSAS and NEG marshals are crucial, here is an FAQ on what the program is and how it helps.

What is a CSAS Marshal?

A CSAS marshal is a casual worker of Welsh Cycling. A marshal is a highly skilled and well trained member of the team who provides road races throughout Wales, with the specific role of keeping the general public and all the riders safe. You will see our marshals at static positions around the courses or on motorcycles amongst the race to allow dynamic risk assessments. All our marshals undertake vetting from the Gwent Police Force as well as training delivered by their trainers.

What is the program?

The Community Safety Accreditation Scheme was established by the Police Reform Act 2002. This is a scheme which is co-ordinated by Gwent Police, with North Wales, Dyffed Powys and South Wales Police forces supporting. The training received by the marshals gives them the power to stop and direct traffic and pedestrians. It operates across the whole of Wales and without the dedicated hard work of our marshals, quite simply road racing would not function. Each team is headed up by a Volunteer Coordinator who undertakes the allocations for events.

What is the benefit?

One of the major benefits of the scheme is that it reduces the workload on local Police Forces. Previously, road races would require the Police to supply motorcycle outriders and to temporarily close roads. This would obviously be more disruptive to the local populations and a burden on local Police.

The scheme also allows a competitive road race calendar to be in place across Wales, where Olympic medalists such as Mark Cavendish, elite riders such as Luke Rowe and of course Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas have all competed.
