Chris Landon and Paul Crapper were recognised at the Wales Sport Awards in BBC Hoddinott Hall for their contributions to cycling in Wales, with Olympic champion Elinor Barker coming third in the BBC Wales Sport Personality of the Year.

Abergavenny Road Club’s Paul Crapper was awarded Community Coach of the Year for his work as a volunteer coach at the club. Paul was presented his award by double Olympic silver medallist Becky James in Cardiff.

Paul specialises in mountain biking and cyclo-cross, and has inspired hundreds of people to take up cycling in Monmouthshire. Every week he runs beginners, women-only and youth Go-Ride club sessions in Abergavenny, and with the club a finalist in the Women’s Sports Trust Awards earlier this year.

“It’s really rewarding to see the progression that a cyclist makes – whether they’re older, younger, male or female. It’s the confidence you see starting to build. It’s really all about getting bums on bikes for life!”

Cardiff’s Chris Landon was awarded Volunteer of the Year at the ceremony for his support of cycling. Chris has organised more than 60 races over the last 18 years, including the Ras de Cymru and Cadence Junior Road Race, the opening round of the British Cycling Junior Road Race Series. Chris was presented his award by Director of BBC Cymru Wales, Rhodri Talfan Davies.

“The best part of organising a race is when it’s all finished and you hear the riders talking about it – what they found difficult, what they enjoyed. After all, that’s what cycling is all about – the facing up to a physical and mental challenge.”

Elinor Barker came third in the public vote for BBC Wales Sport Personality of the Year, where double Olympic champion Jade Jones took the main prize. Olympic gold medallist Owain Doull was also shortlisted for BBC Wales Sport Personality of the Year.

Elinor has had a remarkable year, becoming Olympic champion in the Team Pursuit breaking the world record three times in Rio. She took bronze in the Team Pursuit at the UCI World Track Cycling Championships in London, and achieved individual success with a gold medal in the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Apeldoorn in November.
