Ethan Vernon set a new world best time in the 3km individual pursuit on day one of the HSBC UK | National Youth and Junior Track Championships in Newport.
The Team KGF rider, set to represent Great Britain Cycling Team at the UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships next month, stopped the clock in 3:10.121 in qualification, over six seconds clear of his nearest rival.
Vernon went under the world record mark again in the final, crossing the line in 3:10.371 to beat Zach Bridges of Ribble Cycling to the junior men’s individual pursuit gold, with Matthew Burke (Team Backstedt-Hotchillee) beating his teammate Charley Calvert to bronze.
In the junior women’s scratch race, Jadan Weldtite-Vive le Velo’s Elena Smith won gold, with Amy Monkhouse (Team Backstedt-Hotchillee) and Ella Barnwell (TRCC) winning silver and bronze respectively.
Rhys Thomas was crowned under-16 men’s sprint champion after a dominant day in the saddle.
The Fusion-Gearclub-WORX rider beat John Culpan (Black Line) 2-0 in the final for gold, with Oscar Nilsson-Julien (VC Londres) taking bronze.
Emma Finucane (Towy Riders) took the under-16 women’s sprint title – unbeaten throughout on the opening day of the championships.
Finucane qualified fastest in 12.269 before beating Zoe Backstedt (Maindy Flyers Youth CC) in the final with CT OnForm’s Sophie Lewis winning bronze.
