The third round of the UCI Track World Cup will take place at the Velodromo Bicentenario, Aguascalientes, 17 – 19 January with Team USN taking five riders to the event, including newly crowned British Madison Champions Jon Mould and George Atkins.
Women's Team Pursuit training at Wales National Velodrome, Newport
The competition action will begin on Thursday 17 January, with Team USN featuring in the Women’s Team Pursuit, Men’s Omnium and the Points Race. Elinor Barker, Amy Roberts and Ciara Horne will take to the boards in the Team Pursuit with Jon Mould competing over two days in the Men’s Omnium.
Head Coach Darren Tudor is looking for improvement from all team members in Aguascalientes: “The Team Pursuit girls were looking for gradual improvement between each Track World Cup this season, but with some of the team being ill prior to Glasgow we were unable to compete at round two. However, Elinor Barker stepped up to compete with Great Britain in Glasgow and now we are looking for the team to reunite and perform well in Mexico after a good block of training over Christmas and the New Year in preparation for the competition.”
Jon Mould will be competing in the Men’s Omnium for the first two days of the event. He secured a bronze medal in the Points Race in Colombia, but had to pull out of the Omnium due to illness. In Glasgow he finished 10th in the Scratch race and experienced the Individual Pursuit.
“Jon needs to make an improvement in the individual timed events in the Omnium, and get the most out of the bunch races. He had good form at the recent Madison Championships where he won with George Atkins, and both will compete together in Mexico. For Jon, Mexico provides more experience of racing at World level and to improve on his results.”
Ciara Horne on track in Wales
Ciara Horne will compete in the Individual Pursuit, where she will be looking to post a PB in the event on the second day of competition. Jon Mould will return to the track on the final day with George Atkins to compete in the Madison event. With their recent success at the British Madison Championships, they will be looking for a good result competing against even greater competition.
“Ciara hasn’t had the opportunity to compete in the Individual Pursuit for a long time. At the Track World Cup, she will be looking to post a PB, which will be a step forward for her. Jon and George will be looking for a podium finish as a result of their recent good form but a greater depth of competition at World level it will prove to be an exciting and interesting race. They will need to continue their good form, especially has Jon has two days of Omnium before the Madison on the final day.”
Competition begins on Thursday 17th January at 11:00am (CST) and there will be updates throughout the event on the Welsh Cycling website
