Some of cycling’s rising stars will get their chance to test their legs against one of its legends this Sunday 17 April when Cwmcarn Paragon’s Noel Jones Memorial Road Race gets under way.
Among the 80 riders are Milk Race stage winner and former professional Ben Luckwell, of Cycology Sunwise. He will be lining up against the new generation of junior riders, including Velocity Globalbike’s Peter Kibble, Will Roberts of County Cycles, and James and Sam Tillett of the Giant CC, all fresh from strong rides in last weekend’s Screentek International Junior Tour of the Mendips. They are joined by a high quality field of racers from across Wales, and as far afield as Cornwall and Cheshire.
Organising club Cwmcarn Paragon is well represented with a team including strong climber Ryan Brain and all-rounders Luke Cornish and Gareth Rees and Paul Hayward, who is looking to follow his first Veteran prize at March’s Betty Pharoah Memorial.
The race rolls out at 10.30am from Gwernyfed High School, for six laps and 96km (60miles) of action on a course between Glasbury, Boughrood, Llyswen and Three Cocks. With six leg-sapping ascents of the Dderw Pitch climb to test their limits, the riders will have to keep enough in hand for the fast new sprint finish.
