Launched in 2013 in conjunction with the Outdoor Partnership, the North Wales Inter-Schools Mountain Biking competition gives secondary school pupils an opportunity to put themselves on mountain bikes against pupils from other schools across their local authority, and if good enough, the region.

For 2017, grant funding from the Office of National Statistics along with funding from the local authorities saw the introduction of school based coaching leading up to the competitions. Coaching sessions took place at 17 secondary schools from April-June with over 800 children receiving coaching by a Level 2 Mountain Bike coach.

Each school selected 3 pupils from each of the 4 categories (Year 7&8 girls & boys, Year 9&10 girls & boys) to attend round 1, a local authority based competition. Winning teams from each of the 4 categories then progressed to the regional final to face teams from the other local authorities. The winning teams in each round was decided by totalling the points scored by each of the 3 team members in the time trial, head to head racing and skills test.

The regional final took place at Nant Bwlch yr Haearn, Llanrwst where 60 pupils represented 5 local authorities to battle it out for the top step on the podium.
