With the recent return to activity now permitted for trained groups, we looked how changes have been implemented to allow for the safe and compliant return to group activity. Wenove Wheelers won the Welsh Cycling club of the year title at last years club of the year award and ahead of lockdown had seen a good rise in both activities and number of members ahead of the epidemic, which of course stopped all organised club activity. We caught up with the club chair Rob Harrison to find out more and how the club have been able to return safely.

“Were a really sociable group so having to take a break from our activities was tough but completely the right thing to do in light of such a terrible disease. Our member’s safety is paramount so we knew halting all activity was necessary.

Since the announcement was made for our return to activity we quickly looked at what was needed in order to activity to restart., We booked 4 members onto the necessary COVID awareness training provided by Welsh Cycling and the Welsh Sports Association to ensure our activities were compliant. We now have risk assessments in place and a dedicated COVID lead officer in the club to ensure the guidnence is followed.

With the support of a local coach, we have booked and started a 4 week long coaching programme to help ease riders back into what we all recognise now as a Social distanced club run. We have been running the sessions on a traffic free venue we can of course not worry about members having to position in the middle of the road to ensure a 2m gap from each other.

I hope that our sport will allow us to return to closer riding soon and at this point we are likely to return group activities to the road.

One of the conditions of the safe return was to have a contact programme in place, we decided to use eventbrite not only to capture up to date details of participants in case of potential outbreak but to also ensure we remain within the limits of 30 participants on the “Field of Play”.

We are hopeful that our members will be able to take part in some end of season sportives in the coming months, and our annual club trip to Mallorca can go ahead in October. We will keep our fingers crossed for this and in the meantime were just glad that our members are able to ride in a group environment once again.

If your club or group are looking to return to activity or would like to share how your group are returning please contact your local development officer.
