Record numbers of riders are set for tough competition at the 2012 Cyclo-Cross Championships in Builth Wells on Sunday, 9 December - promising a muddy and tactical showdown across all categories.

The Championships will welcome some of the best riders from across the Principality

A record entry of 178 riders from all parts of the Principality and beyond will contest the four Championships and two supporting races, showcasing at the famous Royal Welsh Showground in the heart of the Welsh countryside courtesy of John Lloyd MBE and members of MTB Marathon.

Defending senior champion, Team Wiggle’s Lee Williams, will be looking to secure a successive victory against a strong field.

With multi-titled veteran Phil Roach of Team Jewson/MI Racing now in the V50 category, the V40 title is up for grabs, whilst Cardiff JIF’s Adam King, who is well on-form this year, will be looking to pull on the junior jersey.

The youth boys' race promises to be hard-fought and entertaining and with plenty of emerging talent in the U12s race this year, it’s set to keep everyone guessing.

Riders familiar with events at the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society Showground in Mid-Wales will remember that the figure-of-eight main course makes use of the great "parking hill" that is a backdrop to much of the showground.

Riders are taken to the top of the hill on tarmac road and then make a sweeping descent by way of grass banks and gravel, hard-standing over the series of car-parking terraces to the gentler lower section, which incorporates the U12/U10/U8 course.

A set of challenging wooden steps completes the course, which promises to test the riders’ technique and agility.

Spectators and volunteers are welcomed to support the increasing popularity of the event, which promises to be an added spectacle to a hugely successful cyclo-cross league this year.

The race timetable is as follows:

U8 10.15am

U10 10.30am

U12 10.45am

Youth 11.15am

J/V/W 12.15pm

Seniors 13.30pm
