Take the challenge, ride a sportive!
With the British Cycling event calendar already filling up with new sportives, some already selling out and more being added every week, now is the perfect time to plan for the year ahead.
Whether that’s deciding which sportives you’ll ride, finding clubs to go out with between events or getting some tips for the first-timer, we have it covered.
Anybody can take part in a sportive, that’s what’s great about them. Described as a non competitive long distance challenge, they can be compared to a marathon in the running world with people of all ages and abilities aiming to complete a set route.
Most events usually include 2 or 3 routes of varying distances in order to cater for different abilities with the longest usually being 100 miles, middle distance at 70 miles and a short option at 40 miles.
Sportives take place across the UK and provide a great way to explore another part of the Country without having to get out the map at every junction!
There are usually entry fees for such events which cover the costs of car parking, a sign posted and marshaled route, mechanical support, well-stocked feed stations and a broom wagon! Depending on the entry fee and whether the event is sponsored, there will usually be a goody bag at the end as well.
