Welsh athletes help Great Britain secure gold at UCI Track World Cup

The Welsh trio Elinor Barker, Amy Roberts and Ciara Horne alongside Olympic champion Laura Trott secured gold for Great Britain in the team pursuit at the opening round of the 2014/2015 UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Great Britain qualified fastest, with Barker, Horne, Trott and Scotland’s Katie Archibald setting a time of 4:20.066 to take the team through to the first round to face China in the fight for a place in the gold medal final.

Wales’ Amy Roberts replaced Archibald in the first round, where the quartet safely went through to the gold medal final in 4:20.166 ahead of China.

The  line-up remained the same for the final, where Great Britain dominated the pursuit to secure gold in 4:21.256 ahead of opponents Canada.

“Really happy with a World Cup win in the team pursuit with my incredible teammates #mexicoworldcup” Ciara Horne tweeted after the final, but didn’t make it to the podium after feeling ill.

Wales' Team USN will compete at the the London round of the UCI Track World Cup Series 5-7 December 2014.
