With demand for places in the first inaugural Velothon Wales extremely high, a limited number of general places are now up for grabs, after over 8,000 places are sold in just one week.

Organisers are urging anyone who wants to participate in Velothon Wales next June to secure their place before they sell out.

Speaking of the overwhelming amount of entries received, Velothon Wales’ Event Director Andrew Taylor said: “It’s great to see such fantastic interest in the event after just one week. We’ve had cycling enthusiasts from across the whole of the UK and Europe register to take part, highlighting just how much of an appetite there is for events like this among the entire cycling community.

“We’re really excited to be holding the event in Wales next June and our team is dedicated to making sure that it is something that will make the people of Wales immensely proud.”

The event, which promises to deliver a weekend of cycling on a scale Wales has never before witnessed, will take place on Sunday 14 June 2015 and will combine a closed road sportive with a capacity of over 10,000 riders alongside a professional race that was yesterday confirmed by the UCI as a 1.1 classified race. This means the event is likely to attract some of the world’s top riders and teams.

Starting and finishing in the heart of Cardiff city centre, the completely closed road sportive will take riders on a challenging 120km route through the breathtaking Welsh countryside. For less experienced riders, there is the option of entering a shorter 50km route which also boasts the safety of completely closed roads.

Anne Adams-King, CEO of Welsh Cycling said: “At Welsh Cycling we encourage everyone to get on their bikes and enjoy cycling, and hope that the Welsh public have been inspired by the performances of our athletes this year on the world stage and will take part in Velothon Wales. The fact Velothon Wales has already sold over 8,000 entries is an exciting prospect and I know Velothon Wales will be a memorable event, not only for 2015, but for many years to come.”

Velothon Wales is the latest event in the UCI Velothon Majors, a global series of cycling events organised by Lagardere Unlimited Events. Other events in the series include Velothon Berlin, Velothon Vienna and Velothon Philadelphia. Since its inception in 2009, Velothon Berlin has grown to be one of the world’s biggest and most iconic cycling events, welcoming over 14,000 riders and the world’s top pro’s including the likes of 2012 winner Andre Greipel, 2013 winner Marcel Kittel and 2014 winner Raymond Kreder.

General entries for Velothon Wales are priced at £55 for the 120km route and £40 for the 50km route (+ a £3 booking fee). There are also a number of charities with entries available, including Velothon Wales’ Gold Charity Partners Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research and Save The Children who are offering individuals the opportunity to enter for just £30, providing they reach minimum fundraising targets.
