Welsh Cycling announce Team USN for Track World Cup | UCI Track World Cup Schedule

Jon Mould is hungry for success as he prepares for the final round of the 2013/14 UCI Track World Cup.

Twenty two year old Mould will represent Wales’ Team USN at the final round of the competition in Guadalajara from 17 – 19 January 2014.

Mould collected bronze in the Scratch race in UCI Track World Cup, Manchester

The Newport cyclist won bronze in the Scratch race in Manchester at the opening round of the UCI Track World Cup, and is hoping his preparation and training ahead of travelling to Guadalajara will pay off in the Points race.

“Since Manchester, I’ve had a block of training on the road in Majorca but in November returned to the track to prepare for Guadalajara. I pretty much missed all of Christmas with track and turbo sessions, doing a lot of work with Darren behind the motorbike trying to make it as much like a race as possible. Hopefully this will all pay off and I’ll be ready for Mexico.”

The Guadalajara Pan American Velodrome hosted the 2011 Pan American Games, but the high altitude of the velodrome may affect the performance of athletes. Team USN athletes have been working closely with Sport Wales and the University of South Wales to adapt to the conditions.

"I just want to give it my all. It’s the last World Cup before Glasgow, so I want to get as much out of it as possible."

“We’ve been training in the altitude chamber in Treforest and sleeping in the altitude tents to help us adapt as quickly as possible when we get to Guadalajara so hopefully we’ll be able to adjust and get on with training.” Mould explained.

“We’ll have to get used to the heat as well. But the training I’ve done should put me in a good position when it comes to the competition.”

In 2012, Mould secured bronze in the Points race in Colombia and is the current national madison champion, alongside George Atkins. This was followed by a successful road season with Team UK Youth in 2013, with achievements shared across the team.

Guadalajara is the final World Cup event that Team USN will compete in before the Commonwealth Games, and Mould will be looking to get the most out of the event before he returns to his road programme in February.

“I just want to give it my all. It’s the last World Cup before Glasgow, so I want to get as much out of it as possible and do the best I can.”

Mould added, “I’m onto the road in February with NFTO Pro Cycling, with camps in Lanzarote and Majorca and I’ll be going straight into the road season.”

“The National championships at the end of June are in Wales. It’ll be good to race in front of home crowds before I get back on the track and prepare for Glasgow. There’s a lot of strong Welsh riders on the road and track who could go to the Games, I think we could get a medal.”
