Independent Review of Welsh Cycling
Welsh Cycling is pleased to announce that the Independent Review of Welsh Cycling has now commenced.
The Review, which as formally agreed by members at the General Meeting on 29 September 2012, has the full support of British Cycling and Sport Wales. Its prime focus will be the governance and structure of Welsh Cycling.
The Review is being led by an independent Steering Group comprising:
- Ian Drake, Chief Executive of British Cycling
- Richard Hendicott, a District Judge at Cardiff County Court
- Neil Emberton, Sport Wales
- Ian Jeremiah, a representative of cycling in Wales
- Jonathan Ford, Chief Executive of the Football Association of Wales.
Richard Hendicott said, “I am delighted to be on the Steering Group for this Independent Review. I’ve worked with a number of other sports in the past but I am really looking forward to getting involved with Welsh Cycling. This review of governance and structure will ensure that Welsh Cycling is in the right shape for the challenges ahead, when interest in the sport is at an all-time high.”
Ian Drake said, “At British Cycling, we recognise the critical role that Welsh Cycling plays in the promotion and development of cycling at all levels including a clear focus on the Commonwealth Games. As British Cycling moves forward with our Whole Sport Plan for 2013-2017, we want to work in close partnership with the home country governing bodies to ensure the best possible outcomes for our sport.”
The day to day work on the Review is being undertaken by an independent sports consultancy, Sport Structures Ltd. Simon Kirkland, CEO of Sport Structures, is the lead consultant and he will be consulting with Welsh Cycling members, partners and other stakeholders during the course of the Review.
Surveys will be sent to club secretaries by email in the next few weeks. Three consultation meetings – one for North Wales, one for West Wales and one for South East Wales – will take place on the evenings of 18, 19 and 21 March 2013. Details of venues and timings will be published shortly.
The final recommendations of the Independent Review will be presented at the Welsh Cycling AGM in September 2013.
A more detailed review of the Development function of Welsh Cycling will be undertaken by Sport Structures in parallel with the Independent Review.
