Go Race MTB, North Wales Series, 2012
Round 2, Tree Tops, May 13th

The race at Tree Tops last year, with the constant rain, degenerated into a mud bath. Last Thursday, when I arrived to set up the course, the conditions were very similar with deep mud and patches of standing water. But with two days of dry and windy weather, the track dried out to give the 49 riders the best conditions they’ve ever had at the venue coupled with a fine race day and wonderful views of Moel Siabod.

Race 1, U16 /U14

Joe Harrison, fresh from his success at the Gravity Enduro, led from the start closely followed all the way by Davey Brookes with last year’s winner Josh Nelson in third. A close battle between Matt Simmons and Rob Owen saw them swap places several times over the five laps with Matt eventually coming out on top.

With some of the U14’s competing in the Midland XC Series, it was left to Gethin Williams to take first spot with Jordan Pryor in second after moving up from fourth place to second on lap two. Jack Brookes managed to pull away from Peter Stewart on the last lap to secure third place.

Race 2, U12

Craig Rogers continued his winning ways by easily taking first place from Jack Williamson in second with Tim Freeman moving through the field from sixth place after lap one to take a close third place, Jack and Tim having a great battle over the last two laps. The girls race was a repeat of Round 1 with Nicole Clarke winning from Megan Woodward and Ellie Pryor in third.

Race 3, U10

With one of the loops taken out for races 3 and 4 to avoid a steep climb, Ben Bright beat fellow club member Will Harding into second with Scott Williams in third. Elis Roberts did well to hold second spot after lap one but couldn’t keep up the pace eventually finishing in fourth. Josie Nelson comfortably won the girls race from Eve Brookes.

Race 5, U8

Huw Jones made it two wins in a row with Ioan Oldfield second and Thomas Blair third. Nia Barnwell finished first in the girls race from Lois Roberts and Lois Jones. It looks as though the two Lois’s are going to have a great battle in the Series with only two points separating them at this stage of the competition.

Time trial

All but two of the competitors contested the time trial run over a single lap of the course. Running in race finishing order and at thirty second intervals, it gives everyone a chance to show how fast they can complete a lap without being held up by slower riders. Gethin W and Jordan P posted the same time as each other and I think it’s worth mentioning that Craig R (U12) recorded the fourth fastest time of the day.

All that was left to do was to meet at the cafe for coffee and cake and present the certificates.

Many thanks to Sean Taylor from Tree Tops Adventure for the use of his facilities and to all the parents who helped with the running of the event and for clearing the course at the end, this is such a big help to me and it meant that everything was cleared up by 3.30.

Next race is at Alyn Waters on the 16th June, a nice easy course with no big climbs.

Go Race MTB, North Wales Series 2012
Round 1, Coed y Brenin 1, April 18th

With the first dry day for weeks, Dreigiau Coed y Brenin Dragons hosted the first round of this XC series at the Maesgwm Centre, Coed y Brenin. At 1.2K, this is probably the longest course in the Series and the Club utilised all the local trail features to challenge the best riders, with ‘route B’s’ for the not so confident, so much so that no one recorded a sub 5 minute lap.

With a total of 56 competitors signed on, the decision was taken to run the U16 and U14 classes as separate races and not the usual combined race.

Race 1, U16

Joe Barnwell (U14) elected to run in the U16 race and had a great battle with Josh Nelson, Josh eventually running out the winner by a small margin. Davey Brookes back from injury sustained in a DH crash was third with Joe Harrison in fourth. Joe ‘saving’ his energy for qualifying for the Gravity Enduro in the afternoon. Lona Roberts found the going hard, this being her first XC race.

Race 2, U14

Simon Price, a much improved racer this season, finished in first place with Jack Nash in second from Ioan Thomas in third. Sol Kerfoot-Robson (U12) finished a in creditable fourth place.

Race 3, U12

Craig Rogers returned to racing and ran out an easy winner from newcomers Jack Williamson in second and third placed Tom Bryn. Tim Freeman was fourth, Tim has elected to race in the U12 class this year after dominating the U10’s last season. Nick Clark’s season got off to a bad start with Nick reportedly falling off three times.

In the girls class, Nicole Clarke had a good race to win from Megan Woodward with Ellie Pryor in third.

Race 4, U10

Race 4 & 5 was run over a shortened course missing out some of the harder climbs. Will Harding took top spot from newcomer Scott Williams in a race that had unusually low numbers for the U10 boys. Josie Nelson stormed around the course to win the girls class beating all the boys except Will in the process.

Race 5, U8

Four boys and three girls lined up for the U8 race, some of them as young as six years old. Huw Jones won the boys race from Ioan Oldfield with Andrew Clarke third and Luke Williams in fourth, this being Luke’s first race. Nia Barnwell won the girls race from newcomers Lois Jones and Lois Roberts.

Time trial

44 competitors lined up at the start of the time trial to complete one lap against the clock. Running in race finishing order, there was some very close times recorded, competitors giving their all to gain some extra points for the Series.

With the Gravity Enduro entourage at the Visitors Centre, it was decided to present the prizes at the Maesgwm Centre to save parking problems.

Many thanks to Dreigiau Coed y Brenin Dragons for putting on a well organised event and the tea and cakes and to all the parents who helped on the day. Also, thanks to Forestry Commission Wales for the use of their venue and co-operation.
