Welsh Cycling has today welcomed the new partnership between British Cycling and HSBC UK, which will also see investment in Welsh Cycling from January 2017.

HSBC UK will work with British Cycling, as well as Scottish Cycling and Welsh Cycling, across the sport from participation at grass-roots level and major organised cycling events through to the highest level of performance with the Great Britain Cycling Team.

Anne Adams King, chief executive officer at Welsh Cycling said: “This is fantastic for cycling in Wales, and the whole of Great Britain. Working closely with HSBC UK and British Cycling, we will be able to offer more opportunities in Wales for people to cycle.”

The new partnership will help to deliver events and support programmes in local communities, towns and free to enter mass participation events to inspire Wales to cycle.

António Simões, Chief Executive of HSBC Bank plc said: “We are extremely proud to be working in partnership with British Cycling. Successes at the Olympics and Paralympics in both London and Rio have put cycling well and truly on the map and we are looking to help build on that legacy to make a real difference from grass roots cycling all the way up to those representing Great Britain at the very highest level. Our ambition is for this to become a true partnership that benefits every family across Great Britain.”

Sarah Powell, Chief Executive Sport Wales added “This is great news for cycling in Wales. The success of our elite athletes over the last few years has led to a real boom in the sport. Large scale events, such as the Velothon, have enabled more people to become active through cycling whilst also putting Wales on the map. Cycling provides an ideal way to get the nation moving more regularly and we look forward to continuing to work with Welsh Cycling, HSBC UK and other partners to grow an active and healthy Wales.”

The partnership will look to continue to develop Welsh Cycling’s offer for all ages in Wales, working closely with Sport Wales and other partners to encourage greater levels of physical activity and deliver the outcomes of the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act.
