Thomas Scammell (Performance Cycle Coaching) was crowned British junior men’s sprint champion on day two of the British Cycling National Junior Track Championships.

Scammell, who had qualified fastest in 11.110 seconds in the flying 200 metres at the Manchester Velodrome, beat Max Nethell (County Cycles RT) 2-0 for gold with Leon Gledhill (Sportcity Velo) taking bronze with victory over Ryan Whatmough (Team Terminator) in the third-fourth place match.

Charlotte Broughton took the under 16 female individual sprint title after a compelling battle with Lucy Shaw Solihull CC). Shaw had qualified fastest ahead of Broughton in 2.33.715 but the MG Décor rider reversed the standings by completing the 2000 metres in 2.33.668 to Shaw’s 2.34.444.

Abigail Dentus (De Ver Cycles) won bronze after earlier qualifying third quickest.

Newly crowned world junior team pursuit champions Amy Hill (Abergavenny RC), Emily Kay (Scott Contessa Epic) and Hayley Jones (Node 4 Giordana WT) were in action in the junior women’s points race after their heroics in Glasgow last week.

Four wins from the six sprints available gave Welshwoman Hill 23 points and another title to celebrate with Kay second with 20 points and Jones third with six points.

The under 16 male sprint reached the semi final stage. Fastest qualifier Joseph Truman (I-Team Cyclists' Club) secured his place in Thursday’s last four, as did Jack Payne (Sportcity Velo), Thomas Rotherham (Sportcity Velo) and Jack Carlin (Team Thomsons Cycles).

The championships continue on Thursday with Great Britain’s double junior world champion Dannielle Khan in action.
