British Cycling Olympic Development Programme athlete Matt Gibson (Velocity WD-40) won the junior men’s kilo on the opening day of the 2013 British National Junior and Youth Track Championships in Manchester.

Gibson’s time of 1.06.899 was enough for gold ahead of Leon Gledhill (Sportcity Velo) and Tom Arnstein (Team ASL360) at the National Cycling Centre.

The under 16 male individual pursuit, over a distance of 2000 metres, was won by Joe Holt (County Cycles RT). Holt qualified fastest in 2.18.609 and was nearly four seconds quicker than Matthew Bostock (Tm Royal London 360 IoM) in the gold medal final.  Joseph Fry (RST RT) won bronze ahead of Stuart Balfour (Ronde-Bicycle Outfitters).

Sophie Capewell (Lichfield City CC) was dominant on her way to the under 16 female sprint championship.

Capewell qualified fastest in 12.201 on her 200 metre flying lap and made serene progress to the final where she won 2-0 against Grace Garner (RST RT).

Sophie’s sibling Emily Capewell  (Lichfield City CC) took bronze with a 2-1 win over Chloe Baggs (BC M).

In the under 12 omnium competitions for both the males and females, riders compete over three events – the individual pursuit, sprint and 500 metre time trial.

Second in the sprint and individual pursuit plus a victory in the time trial gave Anna Armstrong (Border City Whlrs CC) the title in the female contest, pushing Elynor Backstedt (Maindy Flyers Youth CC) into silver position via a count back as both were tied.

Ella Barnwell (Towy Riders) took bronze to complete the podium, a further five points back from Armstrong and Backstedt.

The male competition witnessed Lewis Askey (Lichfield City CC) win gold, thanks to wins in the sprint and 2000 metre individual pursuit. Second in the time trial secured the title, just one point clear of Alfred George (Discovery Junior CC) with Zach Bridges (Newport Olympic CC) third.

The championships finish on Sunday.
