Andrew Leveton (VC St Raphael) confirmed his overall National Grass Track Short Distance Series title at the CC Ashwell Grass Track meeting on Saturday 15th September. Despite the top three in the series already been decided, Leveton was keen to ride the event being staged by the club that he started his career with and against riders he has grown up with or helped coach him.
Despite winning the National Series 2 lap sprint, he was pipped in the senior omnium at the event by Martin Ruepp (York Cycleworks). Junior Edward Goater of the promoting club rounded off the top three. Jackie Field (CC Ashwell) was first woman and Cameron Woolsey (CC Ashwell) was first Youth A. Competing in his first track race for many seasons, first Veteran was Mark Fraser (City Cycle Centre).
The event was promoted at CC Ashwell’s own grass track on the outskirts of the village on a warm and sunny afternoon. The club’s bike store was emptied as youth members turned up in droves to compete in the event that doubled up as the club’s championships. Many were riding their first ever open grass track meeting or even their first ever cycle race. Promoter Max Pendleton and Commissaire Paul Savage did a great job of keeping things moving as riders swapped bikes, pedals and sometimes even shoes to allow novices to take part.
