Report: Brixton CC Super Madison Open Track Meeting

Brixton CC Super Madison Open Track Meeting
Event: 25th June 2011
Event Details
Report: Judith Bonner

The sun shone on Rob's track meet - as it is affectionately being called - and the heat was matched by some equally heated race action. It was an event not to be missed. Proper racing.

Kick off was a combined 10 lap scratch race. Tony Allen Steve Sorba and Will McFarland made it in the top three as they did for the Devil leaving the crumbs of fourth to home club rider Graham Pierce.

Next up some sprints then points races providing little respite for those waiting for the big event. The Kierin heats promised a well-matched final. But it was not to be as the motor spluttered to a halt and no time to usher on a working motor judges the Kierin final was withdrawn.

Judges last year declared the Ron Becket Memorial Double Harness Madison a double harness pursuit. Organiser Judith promised to restore it as Madison pursuit next year.

In the meantime pursuit partners either let rip or semi pootled the final - Messrs Mclelland and Notley no doubt some saving themselves for the Super Madison? Victors Stuart Hourigan and Phil Watkins kept the audience entertained as the hot sun started to batter us.

A good call from Symon Lewis suggesting a practise Madison was welcomed by the organiser who was equally concerned as to the Madison experience of some riders.

Once that was sorted it was straight into the break. All five minutes of it.

The Super Madison lived up to its hype as teams slung and powered team members in. Handbags came out as riders debated some dubious positioning and equally dubious lines. No ambulance aircrew this year but no Elastoplasts handed out so all in all a successful super Madison.

Riders were watched and cheered by an appreciative audience including Rob's big brother Bill and his widow Jane and families. Son George dusted of his tubs and rode the event.

With this meet under his belt do we expect a return of the wonder kid? Sister Eve obliged us in the closing ceremony by handing out flowers and winnings.

Thank you to everyone who made this meet possible. It was hugely emotional for some of us not least Jane and George whose early loving life with Rob was spent here at the track.

Thanks to riders who generously donated money to Robs Youth Velo Fund, and gave us some great racing. Special mention to riders who so kindly and generously donated their winnings back.

We raised £130 for Robs fund.  Thanks to VCL who donated track costs jnd finally Chief Commisaire Geoff Hodgson, Judges Michael Moore Brian Laughton, Derny Tim Phillips, café Jan and George and late MC Tony Hibbert.
