Brooks Cycles Track League
Thursday 12 May 2011, Newcastle-under Lyme

At 6pm there was very little optimism that the Brooks Cycles sponsored Track League at Newcastle-under Lyme, would take place as heavy rain soaked the track. However, it soon stopped and the sun came out to dry the track, enabling a good turnout of riders to contest the event. With the use of the floodlights there was a full programme of races with some very close finishes in all the various groups.
The A Class Sprint league saw Ryan Whatmough, Shepherd Cycles continue to show the form from the first league meeting as he won the Keiren. He attacked early with 300m to go and took a 4 bike length lead with Phil Houlton, Newcastle RC 2001 closing to a bike length as he took second place. In third place was his team mate Tom Powell.
The 500m handicap saw junior Sean Mayer of Lyme RC start mid field in the 9 rider final however he powered around the track to take an impressive win from Ryan Whatmough and youth rider Louis Preston, Lyme RC. The team sprint saw Ian Taylor, PM, Joffie Houlton, PM and Sean Mayer take a good win in this 600m event.
The A Class endurance races saw league leader Robert Lambton, Brooks Cycles dominate the opening 10 lap scratch race before first time at the track league, Barry Charlton, Lyme RC took a well earned win in the 12 lap points race. Barry who is more famous for his time trial exploits used his strength to mount repeated attacks which saw him take a quarter of a lap lead mid race which he never gave up. In the devil Will Thomas, Team Velocity rode a good tactical race to take the win from Andy Jackson.
The B Class events saw some very close finishes with the closest being in the opening 8 lap scratch race where Sam Birchall, Team Velocity, timed his effort superbly well as he took the win by a tyre width over Sassan Emadi, Tunstall Wheelers. Other wins in this group came from Sam again in the devil and from Christain Braybrooke, Team Velocity in the course de primes who attacked from 6 laps out and stayed away for the remainder of the race.
The youth events saw as usual some very spirited riding with league leader Joel Partington top scoring with wins in the devil and scratch races. Imogen Crooks, Lyme RC showed she is recovering well from last years illness as she took the block handicap along with being a member of the winning team sprint team along with Paige Millward, Lyme RC, Alex Braybrooke, Team Velocity and first time rider James Duncalf, Lyme RC.
In the Freewheelers League the event was delayed half an hour and the ten riders who turned out produced some great and competitive racing. The top point's scorers in the event were as follows;
Group 1 - Bradley Hill, Megan Williams and James Duncalf, Lyme RC 5 points
Group 2 - Andrew Williams 7 points
